What Is Batik Art


In Indonesia in general school children wear batik every Friday. Batik is also often used at wedding receptions, even a well worn by the bride. Batik is also commonly used for everyday wear, especially among women. Apparently arguably batik has become a culture among the people of Indonesia. Then what is batik art?


Under the terms, Batik originated from the word Ba and Tik. Ba abbreviation of the word Bahan (material), and Tik is an abbreviation of the word Titik (points). So Batik is fabric is decorated with images of dots. Those points when connected to form lines. The lines will be when connected form. Motif forms in a variety, there is the shape of animals, flowers, circles, triangles, rectangles, and so forth.

What is Batik Art is the only motive? Turns out a way of making batik is also an art in itself. Picture or motif on the batik material will be made using liquid wax or commonly called Malam,  by using a tool called canting. To give color to the fabric that has been drawn is done by dipping the cloth in the liquid is colored. Certain parts that do not want colored or other colors will be done by closing the Malam. Because the process of dyeing and coloring the color barrier (so as not to hit the color) then this batik technique called dye technique hurdles (Celup Rintang).

1. Batik Tulis, namely batik cloth made by using a canting wrote.
2. Batik Cap, namely batik cloth made using canting cap.

The working of Canting Wrote like we draw or write using bolpoint, canting serves as stationery (bolpoint).
The workings of canting cap looks like we use the stamp, that is by affix stamp, therefore the results of batik using canting cap is called Batik Cap.

Besides batik tulis and batik cap, some batik fabric, but it is not the technique of batik. Technically fabric can not be called a batik cloth because it is done with the technique of batik. Fabric types include:

1. Embroidery Fabrics (Batik Bordir), is a fabric made with yarn embroidery techniques shape / pattern like batik.
2. Palekat fabric, is made with technical fabrics weaving machines, with a plaid like batik.
3. Kain Songket, is a fabric made by weaving techniques using gold thread, batik motifs resembling the local area.
4. Kain Sablon (Printing), is a fabric made with screen printing techniques (printing) and patterned to resemble batik.
5. ATBM fabric. ATBM stands for Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin (Not Weaving Machine Tools). ATBM fabric made with staining techniques on the threads before weaving. These fabrics are often found in areas Pekalongan, better known as Lurik cloth.
